What you'll learn
Mechanics
Learning mechanics teaches students to understand motion. During Year 11, students understand the concepts of motion applied to 1D and 2D scenarios and expand to 3D problems during Year 12. Topics such as projectile motion, circular motion and motion within gravitational fields is learned during Year 12.
Dynamics
Dynamics involves the study of forces and energy within a system. During Year 11, students build on their knowledge of forces, acceleration and energy. They also are introduced to momentum.
Waves
During Year 11, students learn about the characteristics of waves and their behaviour. Students are also introduced to sound waves and the ray model of light. The electromagnetic spectrum is investigated during Year 12 along with special relativity and further studies of light.
Thermodynamics
Thermodynamics involves the study of heat, work and energy. Students explore thermal equilibrium, specific heat capacity and how heat energy is transferred.
Electromagnetism
During Year 11, students learn about electrostatics, electric circuits and magnetism. Students deepen their understanding and knowledge of electromagnetism by studying the motor effect, electromagnetic induction and charged particles in fields during Year 12.
Atomic & Astrophysics
During Year 12, students investigate the production of spectra, the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and nucleosynthesis in stars. Students also learn about the structure of the atom, the quantum mechanical nature of the atom, as well as properties of the nucleus.
